3 ways to make your content stand out [even if your industry is “boring”]

Is your subject generally considered boring? Not everyone is going to work for “sexy” industries that attracts readers simply by mentioning what they do. Some of us have a harder time making our subjects interesting for the wider audience. But there are ways you can appeal to a broader readership and get away from boring content.

It is simply a case of looking at your industry from a different angle. Think along the following lines “If my industry was really interesting, what would the content look like?”

What makes a good blog post? You want it to be engaging and interesting for your reader. I have come up with three ways for you to avoid boring content, even if you are convinced your readers will rank your industry in the boring category.

First up, you don’t think it’s boring. Otherwise you probably wouldn’t be doing it. Try and figure out what attracted you to your industry in the first place, go back to your roots and dig up the parts you found inspiring in the first place. That’s always a great place to start.

After that there are several tactics you can employ. Here are 3 of them.

My tactics to avoid boring content

  1. Use the news
News happens every day, we can’t escape it. But this means that there is always new material to work with. Not everything will be suitable for your topic, but try to think creatively. How can you weave your particular topic into a news story? People relate to the news in an incredible way and you can plug into that by incorporating news stories into your blog posts.
  2. Create your own stories
If your industry is very difficult to get enthusiastic about, why not create stories weaving in how you can help. Let’s say you are a will writer. As it’s a legal profession you can’t really write about client success stories without breaking privilege. But what you can do is create a fictitious story with interesting characters who have certain issues. Whether that is Snow White wanting to share her estate among the 7 Dwarves or Hulk wanting to make sure the right person handles his affairs in case he turns green one too many times. Let your imagination run wild and you’ll be miles away from boring content no matter what your industry.
  3. Use infographics
Do you have a lot of data to display? Maybe you’re a financial advisor who deals with numbers. Infographics could be just the thing for you. These are graphics that display all kinds of information in an interesting way. Here is an example:
My favourite tool to create these infographics is Canva. But I have also used Easel.ly and Piktochart in the past. All these tools are free to use at their basic level and give you lots of options to customise your infographics.

As you can see, it doesn’t have to be your run of the mill article; you can be different, edgy and off-the wall, no matter what your industry and attract readers for even the “most boring” industries. 😉
