Blogging Frequency – How often should you blog

We have discussed the benefits of blogging in several articles in the past (How blogging can help you reach new customers, 6 ways blogging can get more traffic to your website and 7 reasons why your business website needs a blog.) By now there should be no doubt in your mind that blogging is extremely beneficial for your business. There is one element, however, that is more important than any other and that is to blog regularly. Most of the benefits of blogging will only come to pass if you blog at regular intervals. But what are those intervals? Is there an optimum blogging frequency?

Blogging regularly means that you post content at consistent intervals. This can be monthly, every other week, weekly, x many times per week or even daily. Which of those you chose is mainly down to you, your business and how much time you have to commit to blogging. (Or how much money you want to invest if you’re outsourcing your blogging).

Is there an ideal blogging frequency?

If you blog monthly, which I suggest as the absolute minimum, no doubt, you will be able to see some benefit. But your traction will be a lot slower than if you blog more often. Google will see you as a website who updates its content only to a degree, so the great benefit of increased SEO will not be very strong. You might think that you don’t have that much content to share, but if you consider all the content ideas I have shared in the articles What to write when you don’t know what to write and 5 Tips how you can use social media to create more blog content you will quickly realise that you can easily fill a weekly slot. And if you need more inspiration, simply go to the main blog page and scroll through. There are lots of articles on finding more content ideas.

A weekly blog post is a great compromise. It’s the option I am currently working with and my audience appreciate the reliability of new weekly content. Search engines love fresh content, it shows the website is active and not just a collection of dormant and dusty pages.

As to a daily blog, that is really only necessary if you are a professional blogger, i.e. someone who makes a living from their blogging. Then, daily content is pretty much expected, fresh content is your life blood. For the rest of us, a daily blog is really only feasible if you have someone in your team whose job is content creation such as an online marketing manager or similar.

Over to you

As you can see, there is a wide variety of options as to how often you can or should blog. And it is mostly down to personal preference. Just be aware that whatever schedule you decide upon, you should stick to it for the longer term. This, of course, doesn’t mean that you can never change it again. If, after a while, you realise you want to blog more or less often, adjust and then stick to the new blogging frequency.
