How to get your blogging mojo back

After you have been blogging for a while and there might come a time when the ideas simply stop flowing. The editorial calendar is running on empty, you’ve used up all your ideas and no new ones are on the horizon. You’ve hit the wall – the blogging wall. What do you do? How do you get your blogging mojo back?

The first thing to realise is that this happens to almost everybody at some point. And I’m counting myself right in there, too. It’s much easier to write for my clients than it is to write for my own business and I’ve hit several walls over the years, but always managed to pull myself back and keep going.

Here are my top 5 tips to get your blogging mojo back

These are tried and tested, and they do work (most of the time).

Set a regular time and place to write – make it a habit

Making writing a habit key to blogging success. You don’t have to turn into John Grisham or J.K. Rowling but writing a little bit every day can help to flex those writing muscles. You don’t have to write a lot, just a hundred words will do nicely. At the end of the week you’ll have a 500-word blog post. If writing every day is not an option for you, then give yourself a set time every week. My writing day is Thursday for my own business, which is why you see most of my blog posts being published on Thursdays.

Writing at the same time and place every time will get your brain trained that it is now time to write.

Set a timer

This is another way to outsmart your brain. If motivation is particularly low, set yourself a timer for 10 or 15 minutes. This is all the time you have to write. When the timer goes off, you are most likely in the swing of things and won’t want to stop.

Read other blogs

What are other people in your industry writing about? Go and have a nosey and get some inspiration. We are not talking about copying here, that would be plagiarism and illegal. Simply let others inspire you and give you ideas you hadn’t thought to write about.

Read more – this will make it easier to write

Generally reading more is a good way to become a better and more prolific writer. You’ll get exposed to more ideas and different ways of writing. Read different mediums such as books, both fiction and non-fiction, newspapers (whether online or the real thing is up to you), magazines, blogs, social media posts, etc. The written world is your oyster.

Capture ideas as and when

To avoid running out of ideas in the first place always note down as soon as you have an idea for a blog post. Whether you’re old school and keep a notebook or use a notes app on your smartphone is up to you. But chances are that you won’t remember all those amazing ideas you had all week when you finally sit down at your computer to write if you keep everything in your head.
